At the Turning of the Light: Balance, Release, and the Wisdom of Autumn

Part One - The Seasonal Frame

The Autumn Equinox marks the moment of balance when day and night stand equal, light and dark share the sky. It is a threshold, not an ending. A pause in the turning of the year that invites us to settle, digest, and take stock of what has been growing.

In nature, September is a time of integration. The heat of summer softens, harvest begins, and energy gathers toward the center. Rather than releasing abruptly, the earth holds what has been cultivated, allowing nourishment to be absorbed before anything is let go.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this season is governed by the Earth element - the energy of grounding, balance, and assimilation. Earth teaches us how to receive what we’ve lived, how to digest experience, and how to find stability amid transition.

Balance here is not about equal parts light and dark in the abstract but about finding our center. When we slow down enough to feel where we are supported, letting go happens naturally, without force.

Release arises from fullness, not depletion.

🎧 Meditation — Autumn Equinox: Balance & Letting Go
This month’s guided meditation is a reflective, grounding practice designed to help us sense balance within the body and gently release what is no longer needed. Through breath, awareness, and steady presence, we honor the Earth’s wisdom, stabilizing, integrating, and making space for the next phase of the cycle.

Part Two – The Lived Encounter

The Earth element speaks to nourishment, gathering resources, and returning to center. It is about being held (physically, emotionally, energetically) so that life can be digested and integrated.

Autumn has always been my favorite season. Like spring, change is unmistakable here - far from elusive. The energy shifts gently from yang toward yin, and the body feels it immediately. This fall baby rejoices in the change in the air: the humidity giving way to a lull, the fragrance of earth and leaves, the sense that something is settling.

As we move into the yin months of the year, we naturally enter a season of releasing. And it’s important to say this clearly: we don’t need to know what needs to be released. We don’t need to name “that which no longer serves us,” nor force clarity before it’s ready.

What’s asked of us instead is something softer - a gentle allowing.

Autumn is a season of bounty. We gather what has been nourished and grown, and at the same time, like nature, we begin to shed. This is not failure or loss - it is a normal rhythm of living. Like breath itself, the great sustainer of life: inhalation and exhalation, yin and yang, receiving and releasing. Balance is not found by holding on or pushing away, but by allowing the cycle to move.

To support our nervous systems, we have to give ourselves permission.

Letting go is not erasing. It is not forcing something to disappear, or pretending a wound or trauma never happened. Letting go is a conscious decision, choosing not to identify with a pattern, a story, or a program anymore. Emotions may still arise and pass, just as seasons do. But we are no longer bound to them.

From this place of witness - observing, honoring, and surrendering - release happens naturally. Not because something vanishes, but because it no longer defines us.

And so letting go, to me, doesn’t mean disappearance.
It means freedom.

Letting go is not erasing. It is not forcing something to disappear, or pretending a wound or trauma never happened.

Part Three – The Deepening & Practice

To embody the wisdom of the Autumn Equinox this month, we might explore these practices:

  • Sense balance in the body. Notice where effort and ease meet. Let the breath guide you toward equilibrium rather than control.

  • Name what is complete. Gently acknowledge what has run its course - habits, roles, expectations, or inner narratives. Completion brings clarity.

  • Release with respect. Let go without judgment or force. Metal teaches refinement, not rejection.

  • Create space. Clearing physical or mental clutter can support emotional release and inner spaciousness.

  • Return to meditation. Regular practice helps us stay present with change. Explore supportive practices in the Mindfulness Library when we feel resistance or attachment arising.

Closing Reflection

Autumn reminds us that balance is not something we achieve once; it is something we return to again and again, through listening and choice.

As September unfolds, may we meet the turning of the light with clarity and care. May we release what is ready to fall, hold gently what remains, and trust the quiet wisdom shaping what comes next - together.  🙏🏻
